Stunning Real Urban Designs

This is a collection of amazing urban designs. It is focused on large-scale city projects in Seul, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. As we observed in the early 40 Awesome Futuristic City Illustrations, designers usually portrayed dark city visions in their illustrations. However, many of you want to see a more positive vision of the future too. So I selected stunning real urban designs by great architects.

Dream Hub Yongsan IBD - Seoul, South Korea – Daniel Libeskind

Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens – Dubai, UAE – Eric Kuhne

Saadiyat Island – Abu Dhabi, UAE

These are beautiful renderings. On the first few images, I must agree with Ralph that they look like sculptural eye candy with no relationship to real life or real urbanity. I wonder what it’s like to stand at street level in between any of those glass megaliths? Why must we always view them from the air, or from the nearby regional park?

However, some of the later images, particularly of Al Raha, look very appealing, and show how the designs work at human scale. These are lovely multifamily dwellings. I appreciate that the building masses were stepped to give more people access to waterfront views.

I especially like the buildings with the stepped terraces. This is a great way to provide private outdoor space in an urban area, and is built far too seldom. (Although I look at it from the perspective of a non-desert dweller who likes to be outside in the sun.)

Ralph and Jeremy, I agree the master plans don’t show the real life at the street level. But if they are well planned, they urban space will offer quality of life.

The Al Raha is an amazing project, I read a line in some website about Al Raha that they are working to provide shadow in the urban environment, so people won’t burn in the desert sun!

Loswl, I wonder too, I would love to know how they do it. I think it is Maya software and after they use Photoshop.

Hellen, Oscar Niemeyer did a great job in Brasilia, Brazil. (The country I live)

Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it. Feel free to send me suggestions of blog posts.
