Actually I don’t follow any strict rules to choose these sites, I usually choose the ones that makes me feel good, that are user-friendly and have stunning visual design. However, you made me think if there is any hidden unconscious parameter I use and I concluded that they always have got not more than 3 main colors and slight variations of these colors.

I took a look at your site, as you said it has got a lot of content. I personally would avoid unnecessary clicks switching the tree layout in the left sidebar to a “on mouse over menu” without long hierarchies. You can try to use the “most recent”, “most rated” or “most viewed” tags to filter the content inside the topics. You should try to improve your rounded corners too.

It seems you use tables for layout, try to use xhtml and css for layout without tables and you will gain a lot of flexibility. If you need a good JS toolkit to get the things done, I suggest Dojotoolkit or Jquery.

Follow your mantra and everything will be fine!
